SESQUICENTENNIAL

In September of 1989 Monhegan celebrated the 150th anniversary of its incorporation as a municipality in the State of Maine. The artist marked this event by painting the island school arrayed in red, white, and blue.

ISLAND ROSES

Captain John Smith described the island of Monhegan in 1614 as "A round, high isle, with little Monanis by its side, betwixt which is a harbor where our ships can lie at anchor." This popular reproduction of Jamie Wyeth's painting "Island Roses" depicts Monhegan Island's rosa rugosas (or wrinkled roses) in bloom with the adjacent island, Manana, in the background.

FOG BOUND ISLAND

Maine lobstermen fished the rugged, cold and sometimes fogbound waters of the North Atlantic in open wooden dories up until the mid 1930s when they turned to the traditional lobster boat which is now in use. This reproduction captures the light and mood of an offshore island as it finds itself enveloped in fog.
